sustainability and rail travel
For the article I wrote about the Southern Railway’s booth of many wonders during the Brighton Festival – and its implications for sustainability- click here. At least I got a joke into it, which is pretty good going I’d say.

brendan cleary
The last of the spring season of Poetry South’s readings ended with Brendan Cleary at the Redroaster cafe. This proved a much better venue than the Joogleberry, with no bands warming up downstairs. Not seen Brendan Cleary before and in this event he was reading from his new collection some turbulent weather. Thumbing through this…

The Brighton Moment
Heard from Alison MacLeod that The Brighton Moment, won a gong in Latest Magazine’s Brighton Festival 2008 Awards night for Best Literature Event. Richly deserved I say, I enjoyed that night about 20 times more than hearing the windbaggery of Gore Vidal.

galactic symphonies
Having been introduced lately to the extremely likeable American poet, and Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys collaborator, Stephen J Kalinich in my local pub it seemed rude not to go to his performance with the guitarist Richard Durant of their collaboration “Galactic Symphonies” at the BHASVIC college. I have to say I was blown…

Big Oriental Squid Inc
Ha. Fabulous. I wandered out of the swimming pool in Brighton to encounter a demonstration against Big Oriental Squid Inc, who were in the process of constructing fiendish, but rather vague things, in the square outside the library. A photocall yesterday at the station booth. I popped along to get a quick quotes from Geoffrey Theobald, who is Chair of the Environment committee on Brighton and Hove City council (and former Mayor). Andrew Comben, Festival CEO who I’ve previously interviewed, and Chris Hudson of Southern Railways. My colleague Simon was taking photos, and…

For example, when Percy Shaw invented cats eyes in 1934 to help people drive in foggy conditions, nobody seemed much interested, till future Prime Minister Jim Callaghan took them up for British roads in 1947 – and they became ubiquitous. What On Track and Southern…

The Franco-British Festival 1908
For client confidentiality reasons I can’t say much about one of the projects I’m working on, but in the course of it I have learned a little about White City in London. It got its name from the enormous amount of marble and white-painted buildings used in the Franco British Festival of 1908. Eight million…

Festival Finnish: a Night of International Poetry
Brighton basking in the sun, and this evening The Quadrant pub had almost 40 people packed into what quickly became quite an airless and sweaty room. Luckily into this were poured the images of a cooler climate. This bilingual event gave you the opportunity to hear again just how alien Finnish sounds to English speaking…
